Physical Education - Promoting involvment in physical activity: positive
and negative influential factors - gender

Gender

Girls are still seen to be playing sports that are 'girls only' and boys
are playing traditional 'male' sports. Hopefully this is changing. There
are still more boys than girls involved in regular physical activity. In
1990 there were three times as many boys as girls in sport. This is now
changing. Females now have the same dollars in terms of grants and
scholarships (e.g. AIS scholarships).

Traditionally, for women in sport there has been:

* less funding

* fewer sporting scholarships

* lower prize money

* fewer sports offered

* fewer coaching and administration roles

* stereotyping that restricted women to certain sports

* less parental encouragement

* less media attention

* lack of role models

* fewer facilities available

Today many of the above have, to some extent, been reversed. With regard
to the media, there is still only 2.5 percent of all sport print media
dedicated to women's sport.
