    What does submaximal mean?

Submaximal changes Anaerobic threshold: this is a result of a more efficient aerobic system and therefore a decrease in the amount of lactic acid needed to be produced Stroke volume: this increase occurs as a result of increases in ventricular size as well as greater contractibility Blood flow: the blood flow to working muscles actually decreases as the working muscles become more efficient and therefore don't require the same oxygen Heart rate: due to an increase in stroke volume (SV), heart rate (HR) actually decreases at sub-maximal activity. Make sure you understand this concept, as it is commonly asked on exams. You need to understand the equation CO = SV x HR. If CO (cardiac output) requirements are the same and SV has increased, then HR will decrease.
