Outdoor adventure activities have grown dramatically in popularity over the past 20 years. We have seen activities as diverse as jet skiing to bushwalking taken up by more and more people. This increase in adventure activities in natural environments has obviously started to have an impact on the natural environment. Soil erosion, stream pollution, crowding and vegetation damage all increase with greater amounts of participation. Conflict between different activities has also increased, as people seeking particular types of experiences suffer intrusion from others with very different recreational goals. It is important to understand that all adventure activities have an effect on the environment. Sir Edmund Hillary once described a trekking route as "the toilet marks the trail." By using outdoor environments for adventure activities, we run the risk of destroying the very thing that enables us to have the adventure experience.

Outdoor adventure and impact on the environment:- People come here just to shoot the birds - seagulls, sparrows - there's no sport in that. It doesn't make sense. Now we hardly see any birds."
