Deflection of an electron beam

If a charged particle enters the space between the plates from outside the
plates, and it is moving fast enough, its path will be deviated by the
electric field. [1] The direction and magnitude of the force do not change,
so this is similar to a mass moving through a gravitational field - it
moves in a parabolic path. This is what happens in a cathode ray
oscilloscope. Once it leaves the field, it continues in a straight line
(assuming other forces are negligible) until it hits the screen, causing a
spot of light.
