Absorption spectra

When light of a wide range of frequencies (e.g. from the sun) passes
through a pure substance (e.g. a gas), only photons with energies_ (hf)_
equal to energy differences between electron levels will be absorbed. If
the light is then spread into a spectrum, [1] there will be dark lines
corresponding to these absorbed frequencies.
