Physics - Diffraction patterns
As well as spreading out, the diffracted light also forms a particular
pattern - a diffraction pattern. If light passes through a narrow slit and
then onto a screen (as shown below) a pattern can be observed.
The pattern observed on the screen is as follows:
The diffraction pattern contains a bright central band and then
alternating bright and dark bands as you move away from the centre. Note
that the central band is twice as wide as the others and that the bands
reduce in intensity as you move away from the central band.
