Structures and materials

This resource introduces physics students to structures and materials via
information on stress, strength, strain and toughness. Let's begin with
materials.

Not all materials are suitable for every job.

During the second world war, ships like this T2 tanker were designed and
build very quickly. There were some serious problems with their design and
the materials they used.

An analysis of materials in terms of stress [1] and strain [2]allows
engineers to make informed decisions about the materials they are to use in
a structure.

Sometimes it is very important to choose the correct materials for a job,
like choosing the correct rubber for a bungy rope. The bungy rope must have
the correct balance between strength and elasticity. Click here to view the

Tall buildings like the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
must withstand huge forces from wind and their own weight. Designing a
tower to withstand these forces requires knowledge of the properties of the
materials used and their performance in different situations

A copper tube may be strong enough to support most objects but steel
tube will provide more strength for the same weight
