Physics - Elastic potential energy

Elastic potential energy

Elastic potential energy is energy stored in a spring or other elastic
material. It is given by the area under the force versus displacement
[1]graph, which, in this case, is the force versus change-in-length _(F-x)_
graph. For a material to be stretched, compressed or twisted, energy is
required. The general name for the energy required to produce a certain
change in length is the strain energy. [2]

If an object is deformed to less than the elastic limit, [3] the strain
energy [4] is elastic potential energy [5] and in a perfectly elastic
material, all this energy could be 'returned' externally (for instance, as
kinetic energy).

The strain energy [6] up to the proportional limit, at a change in length
of _x,_ is given by:

For deformations greater than the proportional limit, a counting squares
approach can be used to calculate the area.

For deformations greater than the elastic limit, [7] not all of the strain
energy is stored - some of it is used in changing the bonds in the
material.
