Physics - Gravitational potential energy
Gravitational potential energy
Potential energy is _stored _energy.
Gravitational potential energy is the energy an object has as a result of
its height above Earth (or another planet). Gravitational potential energy
is given as the energy an object has in comparison to some reference point
- usually the surface of Earth.
Often we are only interested in the _change _in gravitational potential
energy - when an object comes closer to Earth it _loses _gravitational
potential energy and when it moves further from Earth it _gains
_gravitational potential energy. This information is valuable to determine
the amounts of energy transferred from one form to another.
