Collisions - conservation of momentum and energy

An important consideration in a collision is energy. The Law of
Conservation of Energy [1] applies to collisions. However, collisions can
vary in terms of the energy transformations that occur. Collisions can be
elastic [2] or inelastic. In an elastic collision, [3] the energy
transformations are as follows:

As the collision occurs, some of the original kinetic energy [4] is
transformed to elastic potential energy [5] due to the compression of the
colliding objects. All of this elastic potential energy is returned to
kinetic energy after the collision as the objects return to their original
shape. As a result:

You can easily test whether a collision is elastic [6] or not by
calculating the kinetic energy before and after the collision.

In an inelastic collision, [7] some of the initial kinetic energy [8] is
transformed to heat and sound and so is not transformed back to kinetic
energy.
