Physics - Intensity versus distance from a source
Intensity versus distance from a source
As you move further from a sound source, the sound intensity decreases
rapidly. If the sound source is modelled as a point source of sound waves
emanating radially outwards, then the intensity is related to the distance
from the source. Intensity is proportional to the inverse square of the
distance the source, or:
If you tripled the distance that you were from a sound source, for
example, the intensity would be one-ninth of its original value. A
convenient way to work with this relationship is to re-write it in the
form:
In with a situation where intensity levels created by a particular source
are monitored from different distances, the product Id should always give a
constant value. Each experimental setting would have its own specific value
for this constant.
