Physics - Transverse verses Longitudinal waves

Transverse verses Longitudinal waves

Sound waves fit into the category of mechanical waves. Mechanical waves
actually involve the physical vibration of the particles of the medium
carrying the wave. They can be further divided into transverse waves and
longitudinal waves.

An example of a transverse wave is what you see when you watch an anchored
yacht bobbing on the ocean. As with all waves, there is clearly a net
transfer of energy as the waves travel across the ocean surface. However,
the direction of travel of the wave energy is exactly perpendicular to the
direction of vibration of the molecules that are carried in the wave. That
is, a moored yacht bobs up and down on the surface of the ocean as the
waves travel along past it. Other examples of transverse waves are seen
when a long rope is shaken at one end and the disturbances travel to the
other end of the rope, or when wavelets move outward after a stone is
dropped into a pond.
