Tranducers: light-emitting diodes, LEDs

Light-emitting diodes have exactly the same operating characteristics as
normal diodes, but they emit light when they are conducting. This
characteristic has made the LED an extremely useful device. You have
probably already used a number of them today. The most common application
of the diode is as an indicator that power is available to an appliance.
Your computer, printer, TV, video and iron probably all have a tiny green
or red LED that glows to let you know the device is operable. The different
coloured LEDs all have a particular switch-on voltage.
