Nutrients and nutrition continued

As well as proteins and carbohydrates, plants also synthesise vitamins
and various fats and oils. Plants provide the basis - both directly and
indirectly - for human nutrition. An effective human diet should contain:

* proteins (from milk, eggs, fish and some vegetables)

* carbohydrates (from plants - fruit and vegetables)

* fats and oils (from plants and animals)

* minerals (from milk and meats)

* salt (in the form of KCl and NaCl in foods)

* vitamins (from green vegetables and citrus fruits)

* water

* micronutrients (from seafood, cereals, vegetables and fruit)

In order to maintain good health, we need a well-balanced diet. This means
consuming all the nutrients in: adequate amounts, appropriate proportions
and digestible forms.
