Chemistry - Components of food

Components of food

The main components of food and their functions in our bodies are:

* proteins - needed for growth and repair of body structure and, as
enzymes, to control reaction rates

* carbohydrates - a source of energy and a means of short-term energy
storage

* fats (lipids) - a source of energy and a means of long-term energy
storage, also thermal insulation

* water - key component of all living cells and the medium for
biochemical reactions

* minerals - metal salts that provide the body with

which are essential for efficient body functioning

* vitamins - have no energy value but are necessary for body growth and
activity

Components of commercially-prepared foods that have little nutritional
value are collectively called food additives. These include flavourings,
preservatives, emulsifiers, [1] colouring agents and anti-oxidants.
