The purpose and key components of food

Assist in maintenance of good health.

Food may be defined as 'any substance or mixture which, when ingested,
contributes to the maintenance of vital processes'.

These vital processes may be considered to supply energy for all our
activities which include:

Cell growth.

With the exception of minerals and water, all foods are derived from
plants, either by direct consumption or by ingestion of animal tissue or
anima-derived products such as eggs and milk, which are derived from
vegetable sources.

Repair of tissues.

Maintenance of body temperature.

Function of the nervous system.
