Chemistry - carbohydrates
* carbohydrates are the major component of our food and make up more than
half of all the organic matter found on earth
* carbohydrates are compounds of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in which
hydrogen and oxygen are present in the same ratio as in water - hence the
general formula cm(h2o)n
* the starting point in the formation of carbohydrates is photosynthesis,
as described by the equation:
A summary of the inputs and outputs of photosynthesis is shown below.
Although glucose is the main energy-containing product, the by-product of
photosynthesis, O2, is important in maintaining the viability of the
atmosphere on which we depend.
