Chemistry - Renewable energy sources: biomass

Biomass

Biomass includes vegetable matter such as trees, crops, natural vegetation
and animal dung as well domestic and industrial waste. Wood has been used
as an energy source for thousands of years.

Biofuels are produced by processing different types of biomass. Methane,
produced from microbiological digestion of human waste at sewage treatment
centres, can be used in small gas-fired power stations.

Alternatives to petrol for motor vehicles include ethanol, which can be
obtained from cane sugar and cereals. It is generally produced by the
fermentation of carbohydrates such as glucose as reflected in the equation:

Gasohol - 10 per cent ethanol and 90 per cent petrol - can be used in
current internal combustion engines. The combustion of ethanol is described
by the equation:

Ethanol derived from biomass is only one of the alternatives being
considered for the powering of motor vehicles. Other options include
electric vehicles where electrical energy comes from or
advancedtechnology.
