Renewable energy sources: solar energy

Solar energy is currently used for heating and, on relatively small
scales, for the production of electrical energy. In remote area power
supplies (RAPS), electrical energy generated from solar energy via
photovoltaic cells is converted into chemical energy in secondary
(rechargeable) cells for use at night and in periods of reduced sunlight.

Solar energy is effectively pollution-free and becoming increasingly
accessible with the development of more efficient photovoltaic cells.
