Electrons

The way an element behaves in chemical reactions depends very much on the
way the electrons in its atoms are arranged. Also, atoms that show
similarity in chemical behaviour tend to have similar electron
arrangements. Developments in atomic theory from the Rutherford model to
the current orbital model led to a greater understanding of the importance
of electrons.
