Chemistry - Colour and transition metal compounds

Colour and transition metal compounds

The aqueous solutions formed by compounds of most transition metals are
coloured. There is a wide range of possible colours, depending on the
oxidation state of the transition metal present.

Chromium, for example, shows the following range of colours:

Cr+(aq) blue

Cr+(aq) green

CrO4(aq) yellow

Cr2O7(aq) orange

This is a distinct difference between transition metals and main group
metals. Compounds of main group metals (i.e. groups I and II) generally
form colourless solutions.

The colours exhibited by compounds of first series transition metals can
be linked to the presence of When white light interacts with many
transition metal ions, some of the photons are and lower-energy electrons
are promoted to higher-energy orbitals. Consequently the light reflected
from compounds containing these ions is deficient in the absorbed
wavelengths. The wavelengths that are reflected determine the colour of a
particular transition metal compound.
