Chemistry - Cracking of ethane and propane to produce ethylene
Cracking of ethane and propane to produce ethylene
Temperatures around 1000C produce a yield of ethene in excess of 70 per
cent. The cracking stock, mixed with steam passes through the cracking
tubes very quickly and the equilibrium mixture is cooled to minimise side
reactions of ethene.
Ethene is separated from other products of cracking by _fractional
distillation._ Ideally, the other products will also have use as
petrochemicals, or be used to produce petrochemicals. Unconverted feedstock
is _recycled _to the cracker.
