Environmental aspects of ethene production
Ethene production involves handling large quantities of _volatile,
flammable and potentially environmentally harmful_ materials. The main
areas of concern are air quality and water quality.
The EPA sets stringent limits on _gaseous emissions._ The main gaseous
emissions are CO2 and oxides of nitrogen from the combustion of fuels used
to provide energy for the cracking process. These are minimised by
increasingly efficient combustion processes. Leak detection programs keep
the emissions of hydrocarbons very low.
Waste cooling-water is recycled, discharged in sewers to receive normal
water treatment or used to irrigate local recreational land.
