Maximising yield is very important in industrial processes. The yield
depends on the extent of reaction, i.e. how far the required reaction
proceeds before equilibrium is reached. The rate of reaction, i.e. how fast
reactants are converted into products is another very important
The extent and rate of reaction are influenced by changes in temperature,
pressure and concentration, so finding optimum conditions is a challenge.
Extent and rate do not always respond in the same way to a change of
conditions. While a decrease in temperature will increase the extent of an
exothermic reaction, it will also decrease the rate. In such situations,
the chosen reaction conditions generally represent a compromise to the rate
/ extent conflict.
