Industrial chemistry

The chemical industry is one of the world's largest industries and centres
on two major activities:

* _separating useful components from naturally occurring materials. _ For
example, fractional distillation of crude oil provides a wide variety of
useful hydrocarbons such as petrol and kerosene.

* _combining or decomposing substances to build new chemical compounds._
Examples include the production of ethene, polyethylene and sulfuric acid.
