Absorption and emission of energy

When energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation is applied to a
prepared sample, either the energy taken in by the sample or the energy
given out may be studied.

Atoms of different elements have unique electron arrangements and so
respond differently to electromagnetic radiation.

When atoms become excited by heating they absorb energy as electrons move
to higher energy levels - further from the nucleus.

Excited atoms emit energy as electrons return to lower energy levels -
closer to the nucleus. This energy is absorbed or emitted in the form of
photons of light.

The wavelengths of the radiation absorbed or emitted can studied in
absorption or emission spectra.
