Chemistry - Spectroscopic techniques - activity 2

Spectroscopic techniques - activity 2

One of the simplest forms of chemical analysis is the identification of
the presence of certain metal ions in a compound by means of a flame test.

Colours characteristic of some metals include:

Na - orange, K - pale purple (lilac), Ca - red, Sr - crimson, Ba - apple
green

(a) If the light emitted by potassium and strontium was viewed through a
spectroscope in what ways would the spectra be (i) similar, (ii) different.

(b) Explain how the outcome of a flame test is related to atomic
structure.

(c) Is a flame test an example of qualitative analysis or quantitative
analysis?
