Chemistry - Sulfuric acid - question 10

Sulfuric acid - question 10

[SO2]E
_M_(SO2)E
_K_C

increasing T

adding O2

removing SO3

adding a catalyst

increasing volume

(b) When interpreting the above equation, a student claims that the best
yield of SO3 should be achieved under high pressure and low temperature
conditions. However, further class discussion centres around the need for
economic factors to be considered when selecting reaction conditions.

(i) Justify the student's initial claim that the best yield of SO3 should
be achieved at high pressures and low temperatures.

(ii) Explain why high pressure and low temperature could both prove
uneconomical.

(c) Write balanced equations for the other three reactions that occur in
the production of sulfuric acid by the contact process.

(d) Why is the Contact process an appropriate name for this method of
producing sulfuric acid?

(e) As well as being a strong acid, sulfuric acid has other significant
chemical properties. State two of these other properties.
