Chemistry - Sulfuric acid - reaction yield/reaction rate

Sulfuric acid - reaction yield/reaction rate

There is a strong emphasis in the world of real chemistry on yield, i.e.
the fraction of the reactants (or raw materials) that ultimately ends up as
products. The key to maximum economic gain is to optimise both the rate of
reaction and the extent of reaction.

Consider these industrial equilibria:

* the production of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen:

* and the production of sulfur trioxide, a key step in the production of
sulfuric acid:

According to equilibrium theory, we should expect the best yield at low
temperatures and high pressures!_ Why?_

Well, according to Le Chatelier's principle, each system will respond to
low temperatures by favouring the energy-releasing reaction (i.e. it will
try to replace the lost energy) which in this case is the forward reaction.
Also, imposing high pressures will cause the system to try to reduce the
pressure, i.e. favour the side with fewer particles.
