Oxidation numbers in redox reactions

Oxidation numbers provide the fourth possible way of determining whether
an equation represents a redox reaction.

If the oxidation number of an element increases during a reaction, that
element is being oxidised.

If the oxidation number of an element decreases during a reaction, that
element is being reduced.
