Polyesters - condensation polymers

Polyesters have been used in the textile industry for nearly 50 years.
They add springiness, wrinkle- resistance and water-resistance to fabrics.
These properties have led to the blending of polyester fibres into fabrics
used to make suits and similar items of apparel.

_Polyesters_ are so called because they contain polymer chains with
_repeating ester functional groups._ For polymerisation to occur, ester
functional groups must be able to form at both ends of the reacting
molecules.

This requires that one reactant must be a_ diacid_ HOOC-X-COOH and the
other a_ dialcohol_ HO-Y-OH, and that the acid and alcohol (hydroxy)
functional groups on adjacent molecules react together at both ends.
