Preparation of ethanoic acid from ethane

The preparation of ethanoic acid from ethane shows how a number of
derivatives of the one alkane can be produced via a particular sequence of
reactions.

The three-stage reaction sequence depicted below involves the chloro,
hydroxy (alcohol) and carboxy (acid) functional groups.

Being a saturated hydrocarbon, ethane will react with chlorine under
controlled light conditions, in a substitution reaction to produce
chloroethane.
