Chemistry - Buffer solutions

Buffer solutions

Buffer solutions are solutions which resist changes in pH on addition of
small amounts of acid or base and their pH is not altered by dilution.
Buffers are vital in most biological processes where a change in pH could
have a negative effect on the functioning of a cell. To prevent this
problem all injections and treatments such as eye drops are buffered.

Buffers typically consist of a mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate
base or a weak base and its conjugate acid.
