Chemistry - Concentration fraction

Concentration fraction

Questions 24 and 25 have shown that within the limits of experimental
error, the data in the above tables suggests that each system is
characterised at equilibrium by a concentration fraction that has the same
value at equilibrium irrespective of the direction (or initial mixture)
from which equilibrium is reached.

emphasising that the equation stoichiometric coefficients are highly
significant.

The calculation of a concentration fraction, i.e. of the product
concentrations raised to the powers of their stoichiometric coefficients
and divided by the reactant concentrations raised to the powers of their
stoichiometric coefficients can be carried out at any stage in a reaction.
However, it is only at equilibrium that this concentration fraction has a
constant value.

This constant value, of the concentration fraction at equilibrium at a
particular temperature, is numerically equal to the .

The equilibrium constant expression K = [products]e/ [reactants]e - with
all concentrations raised to the power of the stoichiometric coefficients -
is also referred to as the equilibrium law.
