Volumetric analysis - activity 16

Two students, Michael and Michelle, separately standardise an
approximately 0.1 M aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid by titrating 20
mL aliquots of 0.050 M Na2CO3(aq) with the acid to the methyl orange
endpoint.

The only variation in their techniques was that Michelle rinsed the
pipette she used to measure the 20 mL aliquot of the Na2CO3(aq) solution
with that solution, while Michael rinsed the pipette he used with water.
One of the students eventually calculated the c(HCl) to be 0.098 M, the
other student determined it to be 0.095 M.

(a) Write a balanced equation for the reaction occurring during the
titration.

(b) Assuming both students' practical technique was correct, and they
correctly carried out the associated calculations, which of the two
concentrations of HCl(aq) was calculated by Michelle? Explain how you
arrived at your answer?

(c) What was the average volume of hydrochloric acid used by Michelle?
