Chemistry - Errors and correct technique in volumetric analysis -
activity 8

Errors and correct technique in volumetric analysis - activity 8

An important aspect of volumetric analysis is correct preparation of all
glassware used.

Consider the situation where the ammonia content of a cleaning agent is
determined by titration with HCl(aq).

(a) Give the equation of the reaction occurring during the titration.

(b) How will the calculated _c_(NH3) compare with the true c(NH3) in the
cleaning agent if:

(i) the titration flask is rinsed with cleaning agent rather than water.

(ii) the burette is rinsed with water prior to filling it with the HCl(aq)
to be used in the titration.

(iii) the pipette is rinsed with water immediately before taking an
aliquot of the cleaning agent.

The correct procedure for rinsing glassware used in volumetric analysis
is:

Volumetric and titration (conical) flasks - rinse with distilled
(deionised) water.

Pipettes and burettes - rinse with the solution that they will be used to
transfer.
