Chemistry - Acid-base indicators

Acid-base indicators

View the animation to find out about acid-base indicators.

How do you determine whether a substance is acidic, alkaline or neutral?
[1]

Considering the corrosive [2] nature of acids and bases it would be
foolish to taste them. Acid-base indicators [3] are often used instead.
Indicators are special chemicals which change colour in the presence of
acids and bases. Many are naturally occurring and can be extracted from
plants (e.g. litmus). Others are manufactured synthetically (e.g.
phenolphthalein).
