Using symbols - the language of chemistry
The language of chemistry is one of symbols. Symbols are used to write
chemical information in a brief, informative and clear way.
Every type of material is given its own symbol or combination of symbols
to represent how it is made. You need to be familiar with a number of these
symbols and have an idea of what they represent.
Some common elements and their symbols are:
H - hydrogen
He - helium
C - carbon
N - nitrogen
O - oxygen
