Selective breeding

Individuals of sexually reproducing organisms with certain favoured
characteristics are selected and mated to increase the chance of the
offspring having the desired characteristic. This is referred to as
artificial selection [1] or selective breeding and has given rise to
numerous varieties of domestic breeds of cereals, cattle, pigs etc., with
characteristics to suit particular purposes. Even prawns have been
artificially selected by the CSIRO for size and disease resistance to
improve aquaculture.
