Biology - Inheritance of autosomal dominant characteristics
Inheritance of autosomal dominant characteristics
_ (Autosomal = on the non-sex chromosomes)_
* The characteristic will be apparent if the individual has at least one
dominant allele for that characteristic. For example, or
* Every individual showing the characteristic has at least one parent
showing the characteristic (only the dominant allele for the characteristic
is needed for the individual to show the trait).
* About equal numbers of males and females show the characteristic if
there are large numbers of individuals involved. The trait is not related
to the sex of the individual because the allele is not carried on the X or
Y chromosome.
Examples of genetic disorders [1] following the autosomal dominant pattern
of inheritance include:
* Huntington's disorder
* Achondroplasia
* Mid-digital hair on fingers
* Knee cap absent and long nail development.
