Biology - Gene pool

Gene pool

The gene pool is the genetic information (sum of all the alleles) within a
population of a species whereas the allele frequency [1] is a measurement
of each allele in a population. A clear picture of the gene pool of a
population can be given by calculating the frequency of its alleles. For
this to be possible, the genotypes of individuals in the population must be
known. In a closed population (no immigration or emigration) in which
phenotypes of members have no advantage over others (no natural selection)
and matings are random, the allele frequency tends to remain constant from
generation to generation (Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium). Where there are
selective pressures and migration, changes in allele frequency within the
population can occur.
