Fossils - Evidence of life in the past

Fossils are the remains or traces [1] of organisms that once lived. When
organisms die, their soft parts tend to decay and decompose leaving little
or no trace.

Kinds of fossils include:

* hard parts such as teeth, bones, shells

* shells, bones or woody tissues replaced by minerals such as silica in
the process of mineralisation

* tracks, footprints

* imprints of leaves

* moulds and casts

* coprolites or faeces

* pollen grains
