Biology - Mutations

Mutations

Variations between members of a species which reproduce asexually will
be due to mutations or to the effect of environmental factors on their
genotype. Can you explain why?

Mutations [1] are the only way in which new genetic information is
introduced into the genotype of an organism and therefore the gene pool [2]
of the population. If the mutation conveys an advantage to the organism
then it is likely to spread throughout the population over successive
generations according to the Mendelian patterns of inheritance.

Most mutations are deleterious (disadvantageous) and selection [3] against
them results in their elimination from the gene pool.
