Experimental Method and Design

It is important that you know the basic principles involved in a
well-designed experiment.

An experiment or investigation is designed to test a hypothesis. A
hypothesis is an idea or suggestion, expressed as a statement, which tries
to explain observations of something. The expected results can be
predicted, followed by the inference, which can be drawn in an" If...
then..." statement. For example, "If the indicator turns yellow, then
carbon dioxide must have been given out. If the indicator did not turn
yellow, then..."

An appropriate hypothesis is one that is able to be tested by means of
experimentation. The results will either support (validate) or negate
(disprove, invalidate, refute) the hypothesis. _A hypothesis is not
proved!_

If the hypothesis is disproved after repeated testing, then a new
hypothesis must be put forward. In_ designing_ an experiment, certain
features must be considered.
