Guard cell activity

How stomata open and close

Regulation of the stomatal opening and closure is by the action of the
guard cells either side of the apertures in the leaf epidermis (usually the
lower). Guard cells contain chloroplasts and therefore carry out
photosynthesis [1] in appropriate light intensity.

Stoma [2] - singular, stomata - plural (stomate and stomates can be
used).
