Dormancy

In certain conditions, a plant may become dormant. Growth and development
may slow and eventually cease, with metabolic activity being only
sufficient to maintain life. Dormancy is geared to environmental
conditions. Seeds, spores, buds and storage organs such as bulbs are able
to withstand adverse conditions. A return to favourable conditions triggers
an increase in metabolic activity and a resumption of growth and
development.
