Biology - Functioning Nervous Systems
Functioning Nervous Systems
A functioning nervous system involves:
* generation of nerve impulses (electrical charges resulting from an
action potential ) in excitable cells. Stimulus must reach the threshold
level for intensity to produce an action potential. For an individual
neuron, the action potential does not vary in strength - it is either
generated or it is not
* conduction or transmission of impulses along axon or dendron - only in
sensory neurons. 0.5 m/sec - 100 m/sec, depending on the kind of neuron and
organism
* chemical transmission of impulse (signal) to other cells across a
synapse by neurotransmitters [1]
