Biology - Acquired Immunity

Acquired Immunity

An individual acquires natural immunity:

* _actively_, by making antibodies against a pathogen if it exposed to
that pathogen

* _passively_, by antibodies diffusing across the placenta of a mother to
the foetus during pregnancy and in a mother's breast milk

Artificial immunity can be:

* _actively_ induced by injection or ingestion of vaccines containing a
weakened culture of pathogen, a killed pathogen or inactivated toxin
(toxoid [1]); each still has the particular antigen so will stimulate the
production of antibodies

* _passively_ acquired by direct input of ready-made antibodies,
providing immunity rapidly until the body makes its own
