Biology - Vectors
Vectors are carriers of parasites from one host to the next, without
themselves causing the disease. Many insects are vectors. An insect may
feed on an infected animal or plant and transfer the parasite to the next
animal it feeds on.
* Dutch elm disease is transmitted from one tree to the next by the elm
* The mistletoe bird is highly specialised to carry the mistletoe seed
from host to host. It digests the juicy part of the seed for its food, and
the undigested seed passes through the gut readily because it has a
laxative in the slimy coat. The bird wags its tail and perches in such a
way that the seeds are dropped onto the branch rather than falling to the
* Mosquitoes carry protozoa , causing sleeping sickness or malaria.
They can inject parasites while feeding on human blood. View the video.
