Biology - Contribution of Body Systems to Homeostasis
Contribution of Body Systems to Homeostasis
Contribution of body systems to homeostasis:
Nervous system
Detects changes in the external and internal environments; relays
information to CNS; processes information; transmits impulses
to effectors to respond; coordinates responses
Hormone (endocrine) system
Produces hormones which circulate in the bloodstream; promotes
responses in target cells to regulate activites
Digestive system
Maintains nutrient supply; processes complex foods so
molecules and salts can be absorbed and transported
Respiratory system
Regulates concentration of respiratory gases; enables gaseous
exchange, therefore making available O2 and removing CO2
(which regulates pH of body fluids)
Excretory system
Helps regulate water/salt concentration and pH of cells;
wastes including urea, excess water, salts and
ions are removed in urine
Circulatory system
The transport medium for requirements of cells; e.g. O2, glucose and
other nutrients; carries hormones; transports wastes produced by cells to
excretory organs
The reproductive system does not play a part in survival of the individual
organism, only of the species.
